We are a group of Year 2 and 3 students at St. Bernadette's School in Christchurch, New Zealand.
This is our blog, have a look at some of the things we have been doing. Please note...some work won't be edited - they are our first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. We would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.
This week in Ruma Rua, we have been learning to name our body parts in Te Reo Māori. We also learnt to use Explain Everything to share our learning. Here is a video that Liam, Althea and Alicia created to share what they had learnt.
We worked hard to create these beautiful pieces of artwork for the Festival of Flowers exhibition. Room 2 have been learning about where we come from and cultures that make us all unique. We researched patterns that represent of culture and incorporated them into the petal designs on our flowers. We were all so proud of our finished work. Aren't they amazing!!!
Earlier in the term we celebrated all of our uniques cultures with a special Cultural Day at school. We got to dress up in some traditional outfits, and clothings that represented where we come from. Each class presented a special cultural performance and parents were invited to come along and watch. At the end of the day we finished with a delicious afternoon tea with a spread of food from all around the world. Here is a video of Room 2's dance called O le Pepe. Didn't we do great!
In Room 2 we have been busy designing and making machines to help Humpty Dumpty on and off the wall safely. We have used our knowledge about simple machines to create some fantastic machines.
Today we tested some of the machines and guess what?? They all worked! Humpty Dumpty didn't have any 'great falls' and was safely moved up and down, on and off the wall.

Last week we worked together as a whole class to complete a technology challenge using our knowledge from our learning about simple machines to solve a problem.
Room 2 Technology Brief
Little Miss Muffet’s Spider Trap
Situation:
Little Miss Muffet is fed up with the spiders coming out of nowhere to frighten her. She must think of something to get rid of those pesky friends.
Need:
We need to make Little Miss Muffet a spider trap.
Considerations:
You must use at least one simple machine in your design.
Success Criteria:
Your trap must be able to land on a specific target -the spider.

Did you know that wheels are a simple machine? Last week we spent some time using Explain Everything to make a picture and record ourselves sharing our information report about wheels. This was our first attempt so we still have lots to learn about drawing pictures and making recordings.
On Wednesday we learned all about the simple machine called a Wedge. Did you know that a nail is a wedge? Did you know scissors are a wedge? A wedge can be used to help join things together or split things apart. We had so much fun banging in nails, cutting play dough with wedges, and practising using scissors to cut shapes.
On Wednesday it was a cold winter's morning. There was frost outside so we put on our jackets and went outside to explore and play in it. When we came back inside we wrote some fantastic stories about our experiences. Mrs M will publish our stories soon...watch this space!
This term we are learning about Simple Machines. Today we made some marshmallow shooters to demonstrate the forces of pull and push. We worked with a buddy to make a shooter and then had enormous fun shooting our marshmallows! Watch this space for some procedure stories about to make your own Marshmallow Shooter...
